Tips for Protecting Your Property

The current shutdown as a result of COVID-19 has created uncertainty and hardship for an unprecedented number of people. When there are times of economic uncertainty we often see an increase in crime. Criminals are looking for items they can take and move quickly.

Whether you are completely shut down or considered Essential and still operating, below are tips that will help to reduce your risk.

  • Make sure your vehicles are locked in either a garage or a gated/secured well lit area.
  • If feasible, do not keep property or tools in your vehicles overnight.
  • Keep all keys with you or locked up and secure. Do not leave in a desk drawer, the forklift or any area that is easily accessible.  Don’t make it easy for the criminals to clean you out.
  • Keep alarm systems intact. If you are forced to turn off any system due to the need to cut costs. We recommend this be one of the last items on your list. If you must, review your property insurance policy first.  Often, there are endorsements that require the alarm systems to remain online for a loss to be covered.
  • If possible, keep lights on random timers.
  • Make sure to visit your stores/warehouse regularly and at random times if you are not conducting regular business.
  • Review the Vacancy provision on your insurance policies. Coverage may be reduced for theft and vandalism when your property is considered vacant by your policies standards.  Some carriers are waiving this provision, but not all.
